Cranes on a Plane – Comfy & Stylish Travel Outfit for NYC

I’ve gone on a 48-hour whirlwind NYC trip for work this week. Knowing I needed to pack lightly but wanted to dress stylishly while here, I picked one key piece that I could wear a couple different ways – for either a cramped plane or for a dinner with friends.

WHAT I WORE:

WHY I WORE IT:

Rule #1: When in New York, wear black. Rule #2: But when you are me, where black with a little extra something – like gold, embroidered cranes.

  • Outfit #1, I wore on the plane. I like to feel feminine and well-dressed on planes, so I’ll often wear a skirt or a dress. I’m a nervous flyer. If I’m gonna go down, I need to look fabulous.
  • Since this sweater is lengthy, I knew it would fall just above the flounce of the skirt. In my eye, this created a slim line from chest to knee, with the skirt ruffle and broad shoulders of the sweater creating more horizontal bookends – visualize an ‘I’ w serifs.
  • I chose the black booties and gigantic hair to add a little edge, since I was heading straight from the plane to Brooklyn to meet my girlfriend for drinks.
  • Outfit #2, I wore the next day for dinner with another friend in Union Square. I wanted to feel like an edgy yet casual Audrey Hepburn, so I grabbed cropped black pants, pointy-toed pumps and straighter hair to add a different yet classic perspective to this amazing top.
  • The bag had gold hardware, as did the earrings, so I was hoping it would pick up the gold thread on the sweater – for both outfits.

Side note – I consider myself among the lucky few who were able to snag a few pieces from the Altazurra for Target collection that launched on September 14th! This is one of a couple items that I purchased, and I can’t wait to highlight each and every one of them.
