BEAUTY MUST-HAVES

Silver + Purple – Episode 1 – Dressed Down

Silver and purple together make one of my favorite color combinations. The two shades have hints of each other in their undertones, so they pair nicely and add a little edge and sass to a casual outfit.

I call this look ‘casual pilot’ – complete with bomber jacket and aviator sunglasses. And these jeans, you ask? Another score from my boyfriend’s giveaway pile! Thank you Levi’s for making the best unisex denim.

This jacket is not real leather but it doesn’t come across as fake at all – it’s made of very high-quality PVC, so it has the effect without the expense. I got it at my favorite resale shop in Brooklyn, Crossroads Trading Co., and it’s a very good brand (Miss Sixty), so the craftsmanship and handling of the material is top-notch.

If I’m going to wear faux-fur or faux -skin (gross), I try to make sure I am comfortable with how it looks – meaning if it’s fake, I want to make sure it comes across as intentionally fake but if I’m going for real, there should be no mistaking it for anything else (even if it’s not).

My dear friend Jack Germain makes amazing handbags, straight out of New York City. Her designs are at the intersection of edgy and feminine, and I can’t get enough of her pieces, especially when they match my lipstick, too!

Extreme closeup of the purple lipstick – it’s not so scary after all! When I first bought into this trend, I was a bit skeptical but I really wanted to try it. I went for a color that looked a bit more natural when mixed with a gloss but on its own can also really pop!

Note to self, though: ease up on the coconut oil as moisturizer – it’s making me look a touch shiny and made-up.

Practicing my classic blogger pose. Not sure it suits me. I just want to scream at the pictures – why so serious?!?! Which inspired the below photo…notice the beautiful blue recycle bins and green trash cans – such a great contrast to my silver and purple look (KIDDING – definitely a photo fail – I blame me for choosing the spot).

WHAT I WORE:

WHY I WORE IT:

The silver bomber jacket was the piece around which I formed the rest of the outfit, followed by the purple lipstick. The rest was pretty easy…

  • I grabbed the gray jeans because I wanted to match the color of the jacket and because I wanted to take it down to the casual level – denim always does this so well.
  • The purple clutch matches the lipstick nearly perfectly, so it was a no-brainer. Plus, I love to choose unexpected things to match each other – like lipstick and your handbag or eyeshadow with your shoes.
  • The white t-shirt added to the casual vibe, plus I wanted the foundation of the outfit to be neutral and for all eyes to be on the jacket.
  • The black shoes served a similar purpose as the white shirt – a neutral no-nonsense base that was stylish but didn’t draw attention away from the jacket or the bright accessories.
  • And the final and finishing touches – the silver sunglasses to match the theme plus a little silver eyeliner – you can’t really see it in the pics – to bring the whole look together.

Take a peek in your own closet and see what silver and purple combos you can create, too!

Until next time,
